Politics is not a God-free zone. Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. . . Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:18) “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein.” (Psalm 24:1) The universe is God’s house, and we need to play by house rules.
Steep Price to Pay
Whatever God chooses to tell us in His Word is true and right. Sometimes politicians and policies go contrary to what God says–then they are trespassing on God’s turf, not vice versa. And if the Church goes silent or goes along with what is false or immoral or ungodly–well, shame on us. And there’s always a steep price to pay for defying God, the King of kings and Lord of lords. The price is individual, family and societal dysfunction–and God’s wrath.
“Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proven, and to be steady on all the battlefronts besides is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point.”Martin Luther
Courage in The Face of Danger
Martin Luther had this to say about having the courage to confront falsehood and immorality: “It is the truth which is assailed in any age which tests our fidelity . . . If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christianity. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proven, and to be steady on all the battlefronts besides is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point.” (Luther’s Works, Vol. 3, pp. 81 ff.)
Enemies to Fight
Here are some contemporary enemies and battlefronts:
The Lie of Evolution
The Destruction of Youth with Sexual Confusion
Racism (in any direction)
If you are deployed on any of these fronts, don’t hide. Rather, be a dutiful soldier of the Cross. “He who confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before my Father in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is also in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32-33)
